Senate Approves FISA Bill (H.R. 6304)

July 8, 2008 - ACTION - from the ALA Advocacy Resource Center...

Tell Your Senators to Vote NO on FISA Bill (H.R. 6304)

On July 9, the U.S. Senate will vote on the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (H.R. 6304), which would expand the government's powers to allow warrantless surveillance of Americans and give immunity to telecommunications companies that helped the executive branch engage in illegal surveillance in the past.

ALA Past-President Loriene Roy said recently, "Providing retroactive immunity for phone companies continues the Administration's unconstitutional use of private corporations to needlessly spy on Americans. Nor is there evidence that this approach will ensure increased security for the United States."

EPA Provides Response to PEER Statement Delivered June 16, 2008

"As we stated in our 'Report to Congress,' EPA plans to re-open the Chemical Library along with the HQ and 3 Regional libraries. Most of the chemical library contents are already in DC but those materials which had been dispersed to other EPA libraries will be returned and shelved with the rest of the Chemical collection. We are currently in the process of recruiting a full-time professional librarian with chemical information knowledge to staff the Chemical Library. The Chemical Library is expected to cover nearly 2500 sq. feet. This is an addition to the planned 4500 square feet and 4.5 full time professional librarians and library technicians for the adjacent HQ repository library.

The American Federation of Government Employees, in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement, has requested to bargain over the reopening of the libraries. Given that negotiations on these libraries begin tomorrow (June 17, 2008), exact sizes for the libraries will not be fixed until an agreement has been reached.

If there are any questions, please contact Jessica McGilvray at the Washington Office and she will follow up with the EPA.
